AEN Presents: The Invisible Load – Navigating Identity and Culture in Leadership*

The Ascend Foundation report identified five top workplace stressors for API professionals: work/life balance, invisibility, acculturative stress, regional and global concerns, and caregiving/personal health.

Among them, invisibility and “identity fatigue” weigh heavily on leaders who straddle cultural expectations, stereotypes, and subtle pressures to conform.

In this session, C-Suite leaders will share experiences of navigating authenticity in leadership, while subject matter experts provide frameworks for managing cultural stressors and aligning leadership with personal values. The discussion will help executives see identity not as a burden, but as a source of authentic strength and influence.

This session examines the often unseen emotional labor carried by leaders who straddle multiple identities and cultural expectations. Even at the highest levels, executives from underrepresented or minority backgrounds can face “identity fatigue” – the mental drain of being the only or the “representative” of a group, contending with stereotypes, or feeling pressure to hide parts of oneself to fit the corporate mold.
