October 2018 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

Happy Halloween!

With the fall season upon us and on the heels of the National Convention in SF, we are continuing full speed ahead with Chapter IAGs, workshops, networking events and holiday parties.

Please take a few minutes to read the important update on Hurricane Harvey Houston Relief Fund. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of leaders and friends nation-wide, a significant amount was raised for the Pan-Asian community. Thank you all! Also, note the dates of the upcoming Pinnacle Summit and Ascend National Convention in D.C.

Below are some other key updates for October.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Chin
President, Ascend

Update on Hurricane Harvey Houston Relief Fund

Just over a year has passed since Hurricane Harvey, and families in Houston are still trying to rebuild. Ascend began an online campaign last year to generate support for the Houston Chapter’s hurricane relief efforts. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of leaders and friends nation-wide, a significant amount was raised for the Pan-Asian community. After careful consideration and due diligence, the Houston Chapter chose to team with two highly respected charitable organizations: Rebuilding Together Houston, and The Alliance, in identifying qualified Pan-Asian families needing recovery assistance. Additional details will be provided at the upcoming North Texas IAG conference held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Houston, Texas, and in future communications.

September NorCal Mixer in the City

Last month on September 19th, Ascend NorCal and CalCPA successfully hosted a social mixer at Fang Restaurant. There was a great turnout of about 70 attendees; students and professionals had a blast networking with one another while also enjoying delightful Chinese food. Many interesting conversations and ideas were exchanged throughout the evening, while new friendships were built. Everyone had a great time, and the NorCal chapter wants to see these new relationships blossom into great opportunities. The chapter will be hosting more social mixers in the future, and looks forward to seeing both new and old faces. It was also a pleasure to collaborate with CalCPA, and the NorCal team hopes to work together again in the future.

A.C.T. Advancing Careers Together - NorCal's New Mentoring Program

On October 6th, the NorCal chapter hosted the second mentoring session of 2018, Advancing Careers Together or A.C.T. (formerly known as the Leadership Coaching Intensive). The most unique aspect of this mentoring session was that the activities were adapted from the theatrical entertainment industry. Using the practices that theatre professionals perform, business professionals can learn to develop their confidence and leadership skills in a new environment with exciting games. This mentoring session showed that although the business and theatrical fields are different in nature, professionals from both fields can still apply similar skills into advancing their careers together.
