October 2017 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

With the fall season upon us, we are continuing full speed ahead with our thought leadership activities, chapter IAGs and other events. I'm proud to share that Ascend Foundation recently released our new research study, The Illusion of Asian Success – Scant Progress for Minorities in Cracking the Glass Ceiling from 2007-2015 which continues to receive major media coverage and further solidifies our place as a thought leader. I would like to extend a big thank you to our executive advisors and co-authors of the report, Buck Gee and Denise Peck.

I would also like to announce new dates for the 2018 Ascend National Convention which will be held on August 20-22, 2018 (Monday-Wednesday) in San Francisco at the Marriott Marquis.

Lastly, I want to to offer our deepest condolences on the passing of Washington SyCip at the age of 96 on October 7, 2017. He was a leading Filipino-Chinese business icon and a great friend and supporter of Ascend and the 2011 Ascend Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

Read more about our other key updates for October below.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Chin
President, Ascend

New Ascend Foundation Research Study Receives National and Regional Online and Print Media Coverage

Ascend Foundation recently released our new research study, The Illusion of Asian Success – Scant Progress for Minorities in Cracking the Glass Ceiling from 2007-2015. We’ve received national and regional online and print media coverage from USA Today, Wired, The Guardian, Recode, San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Business Times to name a few.

The study analyzes the leadership pipeline across all minorities using employment data filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in the SF Bay Area technology sector. The study reveals some surprising results including that race continues to be a more significant factor than gender as an impediment to climbing the management ladder, with Asian women, Hispanic women and Black men most affected, and that Asians are the most likely to be hired, but least likely to be promoted.

Seattle Gala Keynote Speaker, Naushad Ali's Words of Wisdom

At the Seattle Ascend lunch gala, Naushad Ali shared how an unfortunate situation inspired him with an idea. Years ago, Naushad lost everything in the real estate crash, including his house. While living in a rental, he noticed the sink got clogged from his wife and daughter’s hair. That’s when an idea was born. Naushad created Drain Strain, a device that catches hair before it goes down the drain. Needing funds, Naushad pitched the idea on ABC’s Shark Tank. Robert Herjavec bit on the idea. Today, Drain Strain has half a million in sales. Naushad shared how success doesn’t happen overnight and left these words of wisdom:
A - Take Action.
P - Persevere. Being persistent and persevering will get you to your goals.
P - Have passion. Be committed to your dreams.
