November 2018 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

This month a number of our chapters hosted their annual Inspiring Across Generations (IAG) Conferences and I'm so proud of all the chapter activity! See below more details on the IAGs. There are also exciting events being planned for 2019, including the 2019 National Convention in our nation's capital Washington D.C.

Year end is almost upon us and I want to raise an important cause – Giving Tuesday on November 27th. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season.

I encourage our entire community to take action on Giving Tuesday and as you do your holiday and end-of-year giving, please keep the Ascend Foundation in mind. Ascend Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to educate, advocate, and enable Pan-Asian business leaders to reach their full potential and provide scholarships to honor students who demonstrate scholastic excellence, leadership, and commendable community service. Through its research and thought leadership activities, the Foundation's goal is to help Pan-Asian leaders make greater impacts in business. To donate to the Ascend Foundation, click here.

Below are some other key updates for November.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Chin
President, Ascend

Ascend Foundation research featured in Ozy article titled: "Why the 'Model Minority' Ends with Second-Generation Asian-Americans"

Ascend Foundation research was featured in a recent Ozy article that discusses upward mobility and potential reasons why Asian-Americans were the only racial group whose upward mobility was lower among second-generation immigrants. Ascend Foundation research co-author and Executive Advisor Denise Peck was quoted in the article. "And therein lies the problem, Peck says. “Asian-Americans are ‘hidden in plain sight.’ You see a lot of Asians on tech campuses, so you don’t think it’s a problem,” she says. “But the issue is upward mobility.” Read the full article here.

Unleashing The Power Of Relationships! Ascend NTX IAG is a "runway" success

Ascend North Texas hosted its third annual IAG Conference on the home turf of one of America's most iconic brands, American Airlines, in Fort Worth, Texas. The IAG conference in 2018 explored "The Power of Relationships" through awesome Ascend Talks, an Executive Insights Panel and Break-Out Sessions which were facilitated by C-Level Executives from Fortune 500 companies in the DFW metroplex. The 2018 IAG was attended by over 250 professionals from more than 80 companies from the vibrant Dallas-Fort Worth business scene. Last but not least, one lucky attendee went home with 25K AAdvantage Miles that the chapter gave away to early bird registrants. The 2018 IAG attracted a lot of interest from attendees who have come forward to volunteer their time to help the North Texas Chapter Ascend to greater heights. Check out conference pictures here.

LA Metro Ascend: UCLA and USC hosted hike!

On October 13th, the LA Metro Chapter successfully hosted their hike through the Topanga Lookout Trails with USC and UCLA. It was raining that day so some were not able to make it. However for those who did show up, Ascend LA Metro professional and student members enjoyed breakfast at Blue Jam Cafe, and then continued to hike through the trail after the rain stopped. The weather from there on was fantastic. There was light mist and fog, adding to the ambience of the hike. Professionals from PwC, EY, HSBC, Faraday Future, and BYD were present, and the conversations ranged from professional discussions to favorite movies and countries visited. Lastly, we would like to thank Carolynn from the UCLA board for organizing this wonderful outdoor activity planned to nurture mentorship bonding and camaderie.

Ascend Houston Chapter - IAG Recap

The Ascend Houston Chapter hosted a successful Inspiring Across Generations (IAG) conference on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Houston. Approximately 130 attendees were present for this year’s theme "From Inclusion to Innovation". Our inspiring speakers shared their personal stories and insight on leadership, embracing diversity, the importance of giving back to the community, ways we can be inclusive with individuals, and how we see energy and resources.

Our leadership coaching sessions were intimate and engaging that enabled insightful exchange of ideas on best practices and on real-life challenges commonly faced in the workplace. The strong audience engagement allowed for a great day of learning and networking, made possible only through the support of the Board, sponsors, officers, attendees and volunteers!

Ascend Foundation Reinforces Commitment to Houston's Asian Community Residents Impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Ascend Foundation presented a check to two highly respected charitable organizations: Rebuilding Together Houston and The Alliance to support their Houston rebuilding efforts. Ascend Foundation, in conjunction with Ascend Chapters nationwide, raised funds and brings continued visibility to the needs of Houston's Asian community residents that were impacted by 2017's Hurricane Harvey. "Just a week before the disaster hit, Ascend hosted over 2,000+ people at our National Convention in Houston. In addition to the immediate efforts our Houston members initiated, we wanted to be a catalyst to creating sustained support for Hurricane survivors. The efforts of Ascend leaders, members and supporters nationwide for the survivors are a part of Ascend Foundation's and Ascend's overall mission to support and empower the Pan-Asian community across North America. We're so proud of the Houston chapter and the leadership they've demonstrated to their local community," said Anna W. Mok, Executive Vice President, Ascend and Ascend Foundation.
