May 2018 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

This May marks the 40th anniversary of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and I hope you are all celebrating diversity, inclusion and achievement!

To understand the significance of this milestone, I encourage us to look back at the origins of APAHM:

  • June 1977: Reps. Frank Horton (NY) and Norman Y. Mineta (CA) - our 2014 Ascend Lifetime Achievement Award Winner - introduce a House resolution to proclaim the seven day period beginning May 4, 1979 as “Pacific/Asian American Heritage Week.”
  • July 1977: Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Spark Matsunaga from Hawaii introduce a similar bill in the Senate with the revision to rename the community “Asian/Pacific.”
  • October 5, 1978: President Jimmy Carter signs a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration.
  • May 9, 1990: President George H.W. Bush signs into law extending the week-long celebration to a month-long celebration.
  • October 1992: President George H.W. Bush signs into law proclaiming the month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Chin

Ascend Team Member of the Month: Robina Singh, National Director, Membership Operations; Chapter Liaison, Ascend

"Witnessing visionary leadership powered by passion and deep commitment to give back to the community, qualities unique to Ascend, inspire me in countless ways. Opportunities to work on dynamic projects alongside incredibly talented professionals, have helped me develop and strengthen leadership skills.

“…to leave the world a bit better; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!” For me, these words by Ralph Waldo Emerson epitomize the true measure of success. Testimonies from members who credit us for invaluable resources and life-long connections, make me feel proud that I am playing a small role in setting them on a path towards personal growth and professional progress. I am grateful to be a part of the Ascend Family and of the life-long friendships that I have garnered in the last five years."
