Ascend NorCal IAG Conference: San Francisco, CA
The Ascend NorCal Chapter hosted their annual “Inspiring Across Generations” event on Saturday, June 13 at the Intercontinental Hotel which featured an Opening Keynote presentation by the Honorable John Chiang, Treasurer of California. Over 300 registered participants had the opportunity to network before going into morning panels which focused on Continuous Innovation, Leading Without Fear, and Risks, Not Recklessness. The theme of this year’s Conference, Knife’s Edge, became literal when lunchtime arrived and Raphaël Gernez, SVP of Operations, Aerohive Networks presented his journey to the summit of Mt. Everest. The Closing Panel on “Hidden in Plain Sight: Asian American Leaders in Silicon Valley,” produced a lively debate on how to navigate ascending into those executive levels where Pan-Asian Leaders are very much needed and underrepresented. The Gala Dinner and Entertainment was the rejuvenating ending to a long and robust day of leadership learning and training!

Former Walmart U.S. CFO Michael Fung sheds light on the “Myths of Asian Leadership”
On June 20, the Ascend North Texas chapter hosted an inspiring 2-hour professional development session “Myths of Asian Leadership” which was led by retired Walmart U.S. CFO, Michael Fung. Using EEO data compiled from 2015 Ascend report of Asian American professionals in Silicon Valley, Mr. Fung shared his take on what holds Asians back when it comes to penetrating into executive leadership roles in Corporate America. Mr. Fung stressed the importance of always having an elevator speech rehearsed and ready, excellent written and oral skills and prepped us with wisdom on how life at the upper echelons of the corporate ladder is like. Mr. Fung closed the session by recognizing that he is “one of the lucky ones,” but he certainly provided insight, inspiration and wisdom that bestowed luck upon the attendees as well. The event was held at PwC’s Dallas Office and was attended by Ascend members from the Big 4, GE Capital, JPMC, JCPenney, Kimberly-Clark to name a few. Also in attendance were Ascend Student Chapter officers from SMU & UTD.

Ascend Member's Corner: S.K. Gupta, Ascend Executive Advisor
This month we are highlighting what impact being involved with Ascend has had on S.K. Gupta. S.K. is very active within Ascend and is currently one of Ascend's Executive Advisors.
"During my career at Lockheed Martin, many people helped me move up the Corporate ladder. Now I derive satisfaction and pleasure from giving back through Ascend. I do this by helping to lead Ascend Pinnacle, teaching EIS classes, and supporting CEI and other events. Ascend Pinnacle is Ascend's initiative for public company Boards. In partnership with other minority organizations, our goal is to try and increase the diversity in Corporate Boardrooms. In one short year, Pinnacle's network of experienced Corporate Board members has reached 80 members! Ascend may have a short history, but it has a long reach!"
