2015 has been a wonderful year for Ascend. Thank you to each and every one of you for celebrating our 10th Anniversary at our National Convention in New York and numerous other events throughout the year. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished in our first decade and look forward to seeing you all at Disneyland at the end of July 2016 for the National Convention and in September 2016 at the AscendNAAMBA Conference at the New York Hilton.

Ascend Inspirational Leader: Michael Fung
We are delighted to announce that Michael Fung, Ascend Executive Advisor, has been awarded the University of Illinois, Chicago Alumni Achievement Award. Michael is an active member of Ascend and currently teaches the Executive Insight SeriesTM (EIS). He retired from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in 2011 after 11 years as their Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Wal-Mart U.S. Read his inspiring interview in which the self-made Michael says: “I fully believe in the American dream because I’ve lived it, but it’s taken a lot of hard work, some luck and appropriate risks.”
The Good Dinosaur and Sanjay's Super Team Receive Rave Reviews

Our partner Disney's new Disney-PIXAR animated movie, The Good Dinosaur has received rave reviews. It was directed by Peter Sohn, Korean-American film director. The accompanying short film, Sanjay’s Super Team, also features a lead Asian character and has had a wonderful start. Read Sanjay Patel's moving interview in which the 20-year studio veteran animator talks about diversity, the culture clash that regularly occurs among immigrant families in America, and changing the way Asian Americans are portrayed in American pop culture. Read the great piece here!

We highly recommend both films!

Brand New You: Thomson Reuters hosts North Texas Chapter session on “Authentic Personal Brand”
The Ascend North Texas chapter organized a breakfast session on “Harnessing The Power Of Your Authentic Personal Brand” in October. The event was held at the Thomson Reuters campus and was attended by a diverse group of 200 professionals. Tobias Lee, Global Head of Demand Generation at Thomson Reuters, led the first part of the session talking about the importance of having a multi-faceted plan in place to position your ‘personal brand’ to stand out from the crowd. Toby cited many examples from his dynamic career that demonstrated the importance of authenticity in professional interactions both in the real world and the virtual world. Toby was followed by a session by Lisa Ong, National Talent Management Director, Office of Diversity at PwC. Lisa kicked off the session with her own personal story starting with her conservative Chinese upbringing in Brooklyn, how she chose her accounting profession early on in life and how she built a solid 25 year career at PwC. She shared personal brand building tips and a high level action plan that can get one started on building out an authentic personal brand by identifying strengths and shortcomings. Lisa left the audience thrilled by passionately exclaiming that “there has not been a better time to be an Asian!”
