November 2019 Edition

Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

Happy Thanksgiving!

Our chapters have been busy this month with Inspiring Across Generations (IAG) event and we're proud of all the chapter activity and the impact delivered! Thank you to all who attended and to our chapter teams for your hard work!

As we approach the holiday season and enjoy time with our colleagues, family and friends, we would like to highlight an important cause - Giving Tuesday on December 3rd. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season.

We encourage our entire community to take action on Giving Tuesday and as you do your holiday and end-of-year giving, please keep Ascend Foundation in mind. Ascend Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to educate, advocate and enable Pan-Asian business leaders to reach their full potential and provide scholarships to honor students who demonstrate scholastic excellence, leadership and commendable community service.

Through its research and thought leadership activities, the Foundation's goal is to help Pan-Asian leaders make greater strides in business. To donate to the Ascend Foundation, click here and share your support on social using #ascendgiving.

NorCal Chapter hosts successful second "Advancing Careers Together" workshop

Ascend NorCal "Second 2019 in a Series of Two 'Advancing Careers Together'" Workshop took place on October 19th, in San Mateo, CA. This new and improved workshop focused on many key aspects of communication and interactions for more effective 1-1 conversations or presentations, as well as collaboration and teamwork through small group exercises. There were activities to practice listening/questioning for better interaction, using vocal variety to speak more clearly to keep up audience attention, and being more authentic and confident for improved credibility.

The event was well-attended and drove great participation, creating a fun-filled and safe environment for professional enhancement. All attendees had the chance to gain skills to improve their communication in an elevator pitch, interviews, and other work interactions.

Ascend Orange County chapter introduces a unique leadership development seminar

On November 4th, Ascend Orange County hosted the Ascend OC Leadership Development Series: Communicate, Connect, Convince at PIMCO Offices in Newport Beach, CA. This is Orange County’s first leadership development seminar focused on communicating, connecting, and influencing to make an impact in any organization and community. This special event was unique in that registration was capped at 40 in order to optimize the leadership learning experience.

The seminar was led by Dr. Aaron Shaffer, Partner of the Shaffer Psychological Institute, and with over 20 years of international experience working with individuals, teams, and organizations. The first Ascend OC Leadership Development Series was highly interactive and engaging, with attendees sharing their experiences and stories.

Ascend NTX Focus: Communication Skills

On April, July, and September of this year, Ascend North Texas hosted a three-part Executive Coaching Series (ECS), which focused on developing communication skills. The topics were: Communicate with Impact and Influence, The (Fun!) Neuroscience of Conversations – Building Trust, and Presenting with Power. The series started with understanding why authenticity matters in our communication. Attendees learned the importance of conversational intelligence (C-IQ) as a skill that every leader needs and concluded with a practical workshop that put the training to use. The North Texas chapter would like to thank Lisa Ong, Sandi Mitchell, and Zain Ali for facilitating this year’s ECS sessions.
