February 2019 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, we hope the Year of the Pig is a happy and prosperous one for you.

There's a lot to be excited about. A big part of why we founded Ascend was to create meaningful impact for our community and we're pleased to see the effect our Ascend Foundation research has had in raising awareness around the importance of diversity in business and on boards. In January, Facebook's Global Chief Diversity Officer Maxine Williams referenced her Harvard Business Review article and cited our research during her fireside chat at the KPMG Board Leadership Conference. Further, we are finding that our research may be contributing to change at organizations like Google. In their annual diversity report, Google honestly acknowledges that their diversity and inclusion strategy is not good enough. They present a model that Buck Gee and Denise Peck, Ascend executive advisors and Ascend Foundation research authors, believe "appears to break through the minimal compliance approach with a commitment to not only attract a diverse workforce, but also equitably develop and progress underrepresented talent at all levels." Read their analysis here.

Ascend is growing fast and a testament to this are all the world-class events and programming we have planned for this year at both the National and Chapter level. We are thrilled to announce that we have a new Chapter! Please welcome the Orange County Chapter in Southern California to the Ascend family. We're also gearing up for the 3rd Annual Ascend Pinnacle Asian Corporate Board Summit in March, our Golf Outing in June and the National Convention in August. We look forward to your engagement on both the national and local chapter levels!

Facebook Global Chief Diversity Officer cites Ascend Foundation Research

It's exciting to see how Ascend Foundation's research, "Hidden in Plain Sight" and "Lost in Aggregation" is continuing to raise awareness of the need to improve upward management mobility for minority men and women. We are thankful that our peers are putting a spotlight on our research as well! At the January 2019 KPMG Board Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, Facebook's Global Chief Diversity Officer Maxine Williams comprehensively spoke about diversity and talent in the workforce. Her fireside chat was based on her article "Numbers Only Take Us So Far" published by Harvard Business Review, in which she cites findings from Ascend Foundation research.
