Ascend MetroNY 2012 Communication Workshop:

"Clarity of Presentation”

On March 3, 2012, Ascend professionals and students from the MetroNY area came together at PwC’s

NY office to learn about the importance of communication. Guest speakers included Kevin Wong, a Princeton graduate and partner at Princeton Tutoring, and David Yi, a Baruch College alum, winner of several international speech competitions, and current regional director for Toastmasters.

During this workshop, Irene Chan introduced audience members to their speaking styles through a short

questionnaire. Next, guest speaker and moderator Kevin Wong explained the importance of communication at the workplace. Communication was broken down into two components: thoughts and emotions. Wong illustrated how to use one’s energy to communicate with the listener. Wong later introduced the highlight presenter of the day, David Yi. During Yi’s speech, he shared with the audience five tips to becoming a better communicator.

Presenters offered advice on topics such as networking effectively and overcoming fear when speaking in public. They stressed the importance of building confidence through practice, having a positive energy and being prepared. They also advised the attendees on how to identify their communication style so that they could spot potential weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

Finally, the audience was able to practice the tips they just learned in a fun, engaging Toastmaster’s speaking exercise.

Overall, the workshop was insightful and interactive. Ascend professionals and students were able to use their communication skills in a short networking session following the workshop. Communication is crucial. Luckily, members were able to walk away with a newfound understanding of how to effectively and clearly communicate their thoughts and ideas.
