Ascend NY: Student Mentoring Program – Speed Networking Event – Nov 2011

So imagine you are in an elevator and you meet this recruiter who may be able to get you an interview or a potential client who can bring you business, what are you going to say to them in 60 seconds? How do you start a conversation? How do you pose yourself so that you don't look awkward? On November 12, 2011, the Ascend NY Student MentoringProgram Committee hosted a "Speed Networking" event at the Deloitte's 1633 Broadway Office to address these questions.

At the beginning of the Speed Networking event, all the participants were asked whether they have attended the recent Ascend National Convention at Hilton back in October 2011. The recurring theme discussed at the National Convention is about the necessity of having excellent communication skills, networking skills, and executive presence. These were the skills focused on at the Ascend NY Speed Networking event.

In order to excel in these skills, the first step is to be able to introduce ourselves to others in simple words. A few common mistakes we always make when introducing ourselves are that we don't put ourselves in our audience shoes, we provide irrelevant information expecting others to understand what we do, and we are not prepared. The best way to know our audience is to find a topic that interests the audience so that it engages the other person to ask questions. We can always use concrete examples when explaining to others what we do so that there are no assumptions. Of all the mistakes we make, the biggest one is not trying. We should always be prepared to introduce ourselves.

The Ascend Student Mentoring Program is focused onone-to-one mentoring; it is also a great platform for mentors and mentees to network with other professionals/students. About 40 mentors/mentees attended the Speed Networking event that day and they were able to connect with college students from 5 different schools and professionals from various accounting and finance institutions.

Overall, it was a great networking event. If you have any questions about this mentoring program, please reach out to me anytime at Stay tuned for more events in 2012!
