Ascend NY: Student Mentoring Program FY2011-2012 Kick-Off Meeting

Many people asked me…what exactly does Ascend's Student Mentoring Program have to offer? For me, it's a two-way learning experience because when you are teaching you are also learning from the other person. The purpose of the program is to strengthen our NY college students' ability to market themselves and develop their soft skills to prepare for career development and professional advancement. It is also a great way for mentors to give back to the community.

This year we have integrated an interviewing process into the FY2011-2012 Ascend Student Mentoring program which focuses on 1-to-1 mentoring. Mentors are Accounting and Finance professionals with numerous years of working experiences. We also changed program timeline this year to avoid busy season and extended duration of program to 12 months.

New mentors/mentees of the FY2011-2012 mentoring program met for the first time on June 11, 2011 (Saturday) at Deloitte's 1633 Broadway Office. In addition, existing mentors/mentees from the FY2010-2011 mentoring program also attended the meeting to network with each other. About 90 mentors/mentees attended the meeting that day and they were able to connect with college students from 9 different schools and professionals from various accounting and finance institutions.

Prior to the kick-off meeting, we hosted a mock interview event which took place on April 23, 2011 at PwC to select college students to participate in the mentoring program and offer a chance for students to improve their interviewing skills. All Ascend student members were eligible to apply for that event and each selected candidate interviewed with two experienced professionals for 30 minutes each. Students were evaluated based on their qualifications, accomplishments, desire and commitment to make the most of the program. In the end, forty selected candidates are then enrolled in a 12-month mentoring program starting in June 2011 and Mentees are matched to Mentors based mutual preferences, interest, major, and location.

We have also invited a career coach to participate in this year's Mentoring Program kick-off meeting. Obi Okere is a professional career coach with the Five O'Clock Club, an outplacement and career coaching firm. The Five O'Clock Club has been featured on CNN, The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Economist. Obi noted during the meeting that "interview skills are critical for today's job seeker, it's important to know how to effectively convey your strengths and qualifications to a prospective employer. In this advance seminar on interviewing, you will learn all that is necessary for you to take full control of the interview process, outshine, and outlast your competitors”.

Overall, it was a great networking event. I look forward to organizing more events for Ascend Student Mentoring Program and getting to know all the mentors/mentees better. If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to reach out to me anytime at
