May 2017 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

It’s Asian Pacific Heritage Month and I hope you are all celebrating diversity, inclusion and achievement! I am very proud of our Ascend family and all the great activity that's going on. During April 21-23, Ascend Pinnacle hosted its first-ever Asian Corporate Directors Summit at the Four Seasons in Palo Alto, CA. Over 80 experienced Asian corporate board directors and 25 senior executives joined the Summit which ended up being beyond our expectations! Companies who were represented at the Summit show a combined Market Cap of nearly 1.3 trillion dollars. We're also gearing up for the inaugural 2017 Ascend Charity Golf Outing on May 23, 2017 at Manhattan Woods Golf Club - I hope to see you all there!

Our chapters have been very active in organizing and expanding our local/regional offerings, including the Inspiring Across Generations (IAG) conferences. I hope that all of you have been getting involved! Ascend NorCal Chapter will host their Executive Celebration Gala on May 18th, the NY Metro chapter will host their IAG on May 22nd and next up we have New Jersey and Los Angeles Metro. I’m looking forward to hearing what great success stories these conferences will be! We are also seeing momentum rise as we get closer to the National Convention at the Marriott Marquis Houston on August 19-21, 2017. Make sure you book your room and travel if you haven’t already!

Ascend Inspirational Leader: Sandra Leung, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company

Sandra Leung has broken through many barriers throughout her life, she credits her pioneering career to her willingness to push the boundaries of her comfort zone. Sandra, growing up as one of 10 children born to Chinese immigrants, was no stranger to hard work. After earning her law degree from Boston College Law School, Sandra became the first Asian-American female prosecutor at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Sandra later joined Bristol-Myers Squibb as a staff attorney, and eventually rose to become the first Asian-American female General Counsel of a Fortune 200 Company. For her significant accomplishments, Sandra was awarded AALDEF's 2009 Justice in Action award and recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the top 50 General Counsel in 2014 and 2016. On career advice, Sandra reflected, "I forced myself to get outside my comfort zone. Sometimes you take two steps backward to go four steps forward." Networking was also instrumental, "Schmooze with people, present yourself, talk about your accomplishments, look people in the eye, and find something in common to talk to people about."
