Ascend NorCal's Second Annual Executive Celebration Gala

On May 18th, the Ascend NorCal Chapter hosted its annual Executive Celebration Gala. Over 200 executive leaders from top companies and Pan-Asian business organizations throughout the Bay Area were in attendance. Sydnie Kohara, former CNBC anchor, joined us as the evening’s emcee. The gala’s theme, “Voicing Diverse Ideas for Leaders to Emerge” was embodied by this year’s honorees, Yul Kwon of Facebook, Faye Sahai of AIG, and Tiffany Siu of Google. Our honorees engaged attendees with thought-provoking personal journey acceptance speeches that provided insight on their career paths and embracing diversity. The Chapter also awarded three students from SFSU, UC Berkeley and UC Davis with scholarships in memory of Susan Wade, and sponsored by Ernst & Young and Chevron. We concluded the night with dancing and networking. Photos and videos can be found here.

New York Metro's IAG Conference on 5/22 was a proven success!

On May 22, our New York Metro Chapter held the annual IAG regional conference at the beautiful New York Life office. With 200 sponsors, members and guest speakers, the New York Metro Chapter hosted a half day of leadership, mentorship and relationship development, offering great networking opportunities across all industries and across all levels. This year’s event theme was “Fast Forward 2020: Unconventional Leadership and Disruption”. In today’s era of fundamental change with political, social, financial and technological conditions evolving at a high speed, it is important to understand what skills are necessary to provide the resilience required to navigate disruptions we may face. Through engaging and interactive panel discussions, our speakers and moderators took us on a journey through their own personal stories and shared what disruption they have encountered in their career journey, and how they overcame it. Agenda features Ascend Pinnacle Summit

Agenda, the Financial Times board publication, recently featured the Ascend Pinnacle Asian Corporate Directors Summit and interviewed S. K. Gupta, Managing Director & Co-Founder, Ascend Pinnacle and Wade Loo, Independent Director, Guidance Software and Ascend Executive Advisor. The article titled “Asian Director Group Kicks Off Board Mission” discusses the reasons behind Ascend launching Pinnacle, the successful inaugural Summit and some cultural traits that can keep Asian executives from reaching corporate boards.

Wade Loo, who headed the Aspiring Directors Workshop at the Pinnacle Summit, said: “Pan-Asians have a tendency to defer to superiors, whereas when you move up the chain in corporate America they want you to speak your mind and they don’t mind conflict. Ascend is trying to help Pan-Asians be successful in corporate America by understanding differences between their culture and American corporate culture.”

S. K. discussed the Pinnacle pull and push model. We pull from those who are already on boards and push to get aspiring candidates in corporate board seats.
