Ascend NorCal LEAD Series: Effective Management Styles and Approaches

Have you ever felt that your management style works better for some teams than others? How can you be an effective manager in different environments? Upon completion of the workshop, participants will learn to understand their own management style, as well as how their management style can impact others’ behaviors, in order to be effective in any environment. We will explore techniques on how to lead your workgroup to achieve optimum results. Panelists will also discuss how to work with peers/ superiors to leverage best practices and achieve success.


Don Wen
Private Company Services Leader, PwC
Don is an Assurance partner at PwC in the San Francisco office. He has extensive experience serving retail and consumer, agribusiness, technology and services companies. Don has assisted companies with various financing transactions, including initial public offerings, public bond offerings, and private placements. He also works closely with large family held businesses as a trusted adviser. Don is the market leader for the Northern California Private Company Services practice, managing both assurance and tax teams. He has previously served as the national PCS Knowledge Management Leader for the wholesale/distribution industry. Currently, he is serving on the Firm's transformation change acceleration network team.  
Don received his B.S. in Managerial Economics from UC Davis and his M.S. in Accountancy from CSU Sacramento. Don has served on the boards of Ascend Bay Area, the UC Davis Alumni Association and Graduate School of Management and the Women's Center for Chemical Dependency. He is currently on the membership committee for the Commonwealth Club. Don is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a licensed CPA in California, New York and Nevada.
Miroo Kim
Mobile Partnership Strategist, Facebook
Miroo currently holds the title of Mobile Partnership Strategist at Facebook. She has significant experience working in areas such as mobile technology and product marketing. Over the years, she has held numerous positions at technology giants Apple, Microsoft and Facebook. Miroo has an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a Bachelor's Degree from Ewha Womans University.

John W. Kuo
Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Varian
John W. Kuo was named Corporate Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for Varian Medical Systems in 2005. He joined the company as Associate General Counsel in 2003, focusing in the areas of securities, corporate governance and M&A. Today, his management and oversight responsibilities include the company's Legal, Ethical Compliance, Trade Compliance, Environmental Affairs and Government Affairs functions. Kuo is also the secretary to the company's Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Varian, Kuo held senior legal positions at several companies including Broadvision, 3Com Corporation and Acer America. He was also previously with the law firms of Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich (now, DLA Piper) and Fulbright & Jaworski. Kuo graduated from Cornell University and earned his law degree from Boalt Hall, UC Berkeley.
He has also served on the Law Cabinet of the United Way, Silicon Valley, and on the Board of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association and the University Council for Cornell University, and is active in the National Asian American Bar Association.

Lisa Violet

Senior Vice President, Audit Director, Wells Fargo Bank
Lisa is a CPA and senior vice president, audit director for Wells Fargo bank. She is responsible for leading audit strategy of the Bank’s capital management under the regulatory Comprehensive Capital Analysis & Review (CCAR), DFAST, Basel, other capital reform and related regulatory reporting activities.
Prior to Wells Fargo, Lisa held various executive positions including SVP and Chief Risk Officer for the Bank of the Orient, Vice President for Union Bank, and Director positions for Resources Global Professionals and Scotia Capital. Lisa was a past board member of the San Francisco Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Canadian Council of the Americas. Lisa graduated with a BA with honors in Management Accounting from the University of Waterloo.
