The half-truths of stereotypical Asian behavior include being reserved and quiet and not standing out in crowds.  Asian cultures value humility (thus, avoid promoting oneself; be less assertive), respect for elders (thus, avoid speaking up; avoid confronting managers), and saving face (thus, avoid public confrontations; don't get mad publicly).   Part of this behavior is based in reality, but part of it is also based on perception among Asian and non-Asians alike.   Being quiet, diligent, and dependable can have its merits; however, being known only for those characteristics can be misconstrued as lacking leadership capabilities.  Just as there are times when silence is needed, there are other times when speaking up and acting out will lead to the best result. Fair or not, these collective perceptions create a barrier to personal success.

How will you differentiate yourself? How can you build on your strengths, while overcome the unflattering perceptions?  What are the career implications of failing to stand out?
