October 2016 Edition
Dear Ascend Members and Supporters,

With the fall season upon us and on the heels of the AscendNAAMBA Conference and Career Expo, we are continuing full speed ahead with Chapter IAGs, events and with thought leadership activities. Please take a few minutes to read about the New England inaugural IAG conference and note the dates of the upcoming Chapter IAGs. Additionally, Ascend Foundation research was recognized at the White House and we continue to receive major media coverage and voice our position on topical current news stories.

On this important note, I want to start by expressing my outrage and shock over the recent Fox News segment filmed in Chinatown that was a part of the O’Reilly Factor, a Fox News program. The fact that this segment was not only planned, produced and filmed but allowed to go on air is indicative of how unaware even major cable news outlets are. Why nobody in management voiced their concern about this overtly racist behavior is inexplicable. The worst part was that he invited viewers to join in on the degrading treatment of Asians. What is shown on television and in media about us matters. We at Ascend are working on overcoming this by focusing on having more Pan-Asian executives in corporate and global companies. There are very few studio heads and camera-facing Asians as it is and companies like Fox need to have Pan-Asian executives in leadership positions as they would not have green-lit this segment and would not condone such racist material to be aired. I am sure many of you saw the segment and the subsequent media coverage and I would love to hear your thoughts and reactions.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Chin
President, Ascend

A new Ascend Foundation paper titled Lost In Aggregation: The Asian Reflection in the Glass Ceiling written by Buck Gee and Janet Wong, Ascend Executive Advisors, was selected from multiple applicants to be presented in the ELEVATE: AAPI Data Challenge, sponsored by The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) and University of California, Riverside (AAPIData.com) at the White House on October 7, 2016. The report takes a closer analysis of U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) workplace data sets disaggregated by race and gender and finds that professional Asian American men and women are the least likely to become executives in private industry.

In one of the largest financial-focused studies of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to date, Prudential Financial, Inc. found that this culturally and geographically diverse segment is united by a shared focus on the financial progress, stability and security of their extended families.
Among key findings:

- Approximately 33% of Asian Americans surveyed identify themselves as caregivers for another person (e.g., spouse, parent, relative), compared to 22 percent of the U.S. general population.

- 20 percent of Asian American respondents indicated that they provide financial assistance to their relatives, versus only 6 percent of the U.S. general population.

Ascend "Power" Member Series

We at Ascend want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that our members provide. We will be highlighting individuals who have gone above and beyond and are such great assets to the Ascend community. This month, we feature Bartholomew Jae (also known as B. Jae), Senior Manager, Accenture Strategy.

Bartholomew Jae began his journey with AscendNAAMBA as a presenter for a workshop at the 2009 Ascend National Convention. Since then, he has been an active member at the local and national levels. Bartholomew is the current Chapter President of Ascend New England. Over the years, he represented AscendNAAMBA at a number of higher education and professional events. Whether he was on stage or through 1-on-1 conversations, Bartholomew mentored and inspired Pan-Asian professionals and students through story-telling, straight talk, and a healthy dose of humor. For the past three years, Bartholomew lent his energy to kick off the AscendNAAMBA conferences.

We thank you for all that you have done!
