|A lot has been going on at Ascend, and we are now global! Ascend Canada launched its first chapter in Toronto. Ascend and the Commonwealth Club of California hosted a standing-room-only interview with Prof. Amy Chua, "Tiger Mom” author. Ascend’s Executive Insight Series (EIS) has been extremely popular with the pre-executive crowd– the rave reviews and demand for this program has been keeping the Ascend team busy. Ascend delivered EIS to high-level Asian Executives at the White House, the New York Roundtable and several other corporate partners. The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia joined the Ascend Business School Alliance, Seattle University and Drexel University received student chapter status, and the Midwest Chapter hosted its 4th annual Student Leadership Conference. |

|Ascend Canada Opening||Ascend Midwest 4th Student Leadership Conference|
Ascend Canada held its official launch in Toronto in early March. Over 300 executives, managers and professionals from more than 14 diverse companies attended the event. Keynote speakers included: Janice Fukakusa, CFO and CAO at RBC, Beth Wilson, Managing Partner at KPMG, Shailesh Kotwal, Executive Vice-President at TD Bank and Sunil Kapur of the law firm McCarthy Tetrault. We welcome our new partners to the north and embark on our international journey to bring greater value and access to our members!
In April, the Midwest Chapter hosted a successful conference attended by over 120 student leaders from five student chapters in Chicago. Participants engaged in professional development sessions and networked with local area professionals. Some of the popular sessions included "Effective Communication Techniques”, "Professional Presentation Skills”, "Networking & Interviewing Techniques” and "Leadership Styles: Which Leader are You?” Thanks to Deloitte, KPMG, EY, Grant Thornton and PWC for sponsoring the event.
|Ascend Goes to Washington|
In March, Ascend visited the White House and participated in the inaugural Asian American Government Executives Network - Senior Executive Series (AAGEN SES) Development Program. This program is part of Obama’s Executive Order to increase the participation of Asian Americans in federal programs. Only 20 pre-executives were selected from hundreds of applicants from government agencies such as the IRS, SSA, USAID, OMB, DOD, DOJ, HHS, EPA, DOC, and DOE.
Ascend’s Wes Hom and Larry Chang presented "Myths of Asian Leadership”, "Your Personal Brand”, and "Taking Risks”, popular modules from the Executive Insight Series (EIS). Feedback was extremely positive and there was great interest in signing up for other modules. Leaders of the AAGEN and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) continue to explore partnership opportunities with Ascend to support the Pan-Asian community.
Ascend spoke with one of the executive pan-Asian mentors from a major government agency, who agreed with Ascend’s observations that many of the GS14 and GS15 senior managers are too focused on technical skills, prefer to work in silos and are not comfortable in navigating cross-functional settings. This executive also supports Ascend’s leadership philosophy for its uniqueness and tailored approach for Asian professionals, inspiring across generations.
