Ascend Inspirational Member and AARP Tax-Aide Volunteer: Mary Geong

After working 20 years with the Franchise Tax Board in CA as a tax auditor/specialist, Mary Geong decided to retire five years ago and started her own tax business. She was part of the Committee that formed the NorCal Ascend Chapter in 2007 and expresses, “It was amazing to witness the formation and fruition of such a wonderful organization that helps Pan-Asians achieve their full potential and helps them reach new professional heights.” As a volunteer with Ascend for the past 10 years, Mary has had the opportunity to meet many wonderful talented people who have helped her with her own business, as well as personal development. As part of Ascend’s desire to give back to the community, Mary recruited Ascend students and professionals to volunteer with AARP Tax-Aide this year, in support of Ascend’s partnership with AARP. The partnership allows Ascend to get this program into the community so more Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders can make use of it. Mary shares, “It is so rewarding to get a refund for someone who needs it the most and see them leave with a smile on their face.”

Ascend Inspirational Member: Ashok Shenoy,
Senior Director, Head of Finance Change
Corporate & Institutional Banking, RBS

"I have been involved with Ascend since March 2007, and it has been an extremely amazing and enriching experience to work with the Ascend team and community. My first volunteer assignment with Ascend was to organize a boat cruise around Manhattan. Little did I realize that I would sail away and find new shores through Ascend. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity organize Ascend’s first IAG conference, co-chair three National Conventions and head the Ascend Connecticut/Westchester Chapter. I am humbled to have worked with such a talented and dedicated group of executives, professionals and students in the Ascend community. Giving back should be an essential part of one’s life goals, no matter what stage of your career you are in. This is a rewarding experience in many ways, which not only helps hone your leadership skills, but also allows you to build a great network and provide a platform for career success. As Jeff Chin once said, “I can stand tall and hold my head high because I am standing on the shoulders of giants.” Ascend is that giant for me and can be one for you as well. Get involved!"

Ascend Student Member: Kashif Molwani, President, Ascend Georgia State University Chapter

“Ascend has been a crucial part of my life, as joining Ascend was the first leadership experience of my college career. Being part of Ascend taught me professionalism, how to build a network, and most importantly, how to take advantage of that network to start my own career. Ascend provides members the opportunity to make an impact in the Pan-Asian community by hosting seminars, national conventions, and more. I am proud to be a member of Ascend and look forward to staying a part of this family for years to come.” To learn more about Kashif, please click here.

Ascend and CalCPA joined together to offer a fun evening at the movies on March 24, 2016. The event was planned to offer busy Bay Area Ascend Members a break during busy season and from crunching numbers. A private screening room for 100 at Regal Theaters in Jack London Square in Oakland was rented out to play Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Though tickets went on sale less than three weeks before, the event sold out quickly. Members brought partners, spouses, and kids to enjoy the show. NorCal leadership attending that evening included NorCal Board Members Rick Gutierrez and his wife, Rajiv Thadani and his two children. All attendees received a gift bag of Ascend and CalCPA promotional items. The film officially came out the next day in theaters across the nation.
