The Ascend Metro New York Chapter hosted "Professional Image: Strategies for Effective Image Communications,” sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010. This was yet another high turnout event with almost 100 guests in attendance.
The seminar highlighted the importance of building personal presence through our image, and was presented in a motivational and interactive format facilitated by Carol Davidson, image consultant and founder of StyleWorks of Union Square Inc. The topics included different levels of business attire and common blunders, insights on building our personal wardrobe and enhancing our visual identity, and easy tips to include in our daily routine to help optimize our presence.
The evening also had interludes of entertainment, the first by George Gallagher, Ascend Board Member, who shared comedic anecdotes about his personal wardrobe experiences, followed by a surprise fashion show featuring Ascend members styling professional attires that highlight the typical wardrobe faux pas. Networking sessions with cocktails and refreshments were also held at the start and end of the evening, allowing members the chance to meet one another and share their personal wardrobe stories.
The evening's key learning points include having an image strategy that addresses the following questions;
-What is the goal or objective?
-What message needs to be projected?
-How do you actually come across?
-Is this consistent with what you want others to see?
As George emphasized, "Professional image matters. When in doubt, dress a notch better than your counterpart. You will never get into awkward situations if you are overdressed." The key is to build image integrity by having all the components of your image in line with what you want to convey professionally- and this does not necessarily need to be financially burdensome. "Looking professional doesn't have to mean an expensive wardrobe. Stick to the classics."
