Ascend New York Metro and BNY Mellon co-sponsored a unique interactive workshop on Tuesday, October 15. The workshop is titled "Culture Influence on Communication Style.” Christine Park, Senior Director at BNY Mellon, introduced the event and represented BNY Mellon, followed by Hong Li, manager at Ernst & Young, represented Ascend. John Rogener of BNY Mellon Investment Management led the workshop as the main presenter and moderator. It was an interactive workshop which included small group discussions and active participation from the attendees.

The group discussed the challenges and nuances of effective communication across different generations (i.e. Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y). When different generations work together, they often collide as they have different values, ideas and ways of communicating in the work place. No matter what "generation” one belongs to, we need to get to know other people, like colleagues or clients, and find out their preference and style of communication, upon which after that we can shift our own communication style to increase the effectiveness of communication. Getting to know other people’s preference and communication style may be time consuming, but the effectiveness of communication will be increased, so it is worthy to spend time on that.

After the workshop, there was a happy hour and social event in which the presenter and attendees were able to network with one another and share their thoughts about the workshop.

We would like to thank BNY Mellon for their contribution and collaboration for this workshop. We would also like to thank all the volunteers in helping make this workshop a success.

Please see below some pictures from the workshop.
