Ascend Seattle: Volunteer Event - Operation Sack Lunch 03/16/13
Ascend Seattle will be holding two Ascend volunteer events
for 2013 and the first opportunity to volunteer will be this coming up
March! Please join Ascend as we partner up with Operation Sack Lunch once
again to prepare and serve food to the less fortunate. We will be volunteering
at a different kitchen at St. Martins on Westlake.
St. Martins on Westlake is a low income
permanent housing facility operated by Catholic Community Services. It
prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year to the residents and
staff of the building. Between 50-70 meals are served each meal service.
In addition to this task, this kitchen helps process donated food for the
other 1000+ meals they serve each day through 3 other kitchens, direct
street level service at the Outdoor Meal Site to the Nickelsville encampment,
and through other human service providers.
Depending on the donations that come in before the volunteer date, Ascend
volunteers will either be processing hundreds of pounds of strawberries
for freezing, bagging crackers for sack lunches for hungry children, or
doing inventory in addition to the preparation of the meals for the facility.
No more than 7 volunteers per shift as
we would like each volunteer to have more hands on experience. Sign-up
fast before the shifts fill up!

Date: Saturday 3/16
Shifts: 11am-1pm, 1-4pm, 4-6pm.
Location: The kitchen is at 2008 Westlake Ave, Seattle 98121. The location
is called St. Martins on Westlake, and shares a building with FareStart
(they have large signage).
Parking: On street, or there are various parking lots at that area
of town. On a Saturday, there should be street parking available but metered.
What to expect: Upon arrival ask to be directed to the kitchen. Chef Paul,
the manager of the kitchen, will be there to assign tasks. If needed his

What to wear: Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting
dirty. No open toed shoes or tank tops. Volunteers with hair longer than
1 inch will be asked to put on a hair net.
