Community Service
Tax-Aid Income Tax Preparation for 2011 Tax Season

Ascend invites you to give back to the community by becoming a volunteer with our community partner, Tax-Aid during the 2011 tax season.

Tax Aid is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by a coalition of accountants and lawyers. Its mission is to provide free income tax preparation to low-income families in the Bay Area at 27 locations.

Tax expertise is helpful, but there are also jobs that don't require any technical knowledge. In addition to tax preparers, we need:
  • Client greeters
  • Bi-lingual screeners
  • Computer technicians
  • Foreign language translators

Volunteers must attend 1 two-hour tax update training class in San Francisco, Mountain View, San Jose or San Rafael (with 2 hours CPE credits) and 1 computer lab training in SF. Must volunteer for a minimum of two sessions. Most Tax-Aid volunteers work about 8-12 hours over a few weeks.

ASCEND selected locations with sizable Asian populations that are easily accessible for our members in San Francisco, Peninsula, East Bay, North Bay and South Bay to volunteer at. Cantonese and Mandarin translators are needed in San Francisco and Oakland; Vietnamese translators are needed at Glide Memorial and Tenderloin Community School; Spanish translators are needed in Oakland, San Mateo, Redwood City and San Rafael.
