Family Learning Workshops at John J. Pershing
by Computers for Youth
This is your opportunity to understand what Computers for Youth (CFY) does for low-income communities and how you can become involved!
About Computers for Youth
CFY is a national educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to help low-income middle school students do better in school by improving their learning environment at home. In order to do this, CFY targets middle schools in low income communities and offers all sixth graders and their parents a free computer-based home learning center filled with engaging educational software.
About Family Learning Workshops
CFY holds Family Learning Workshops (FLWs) on Saturdays at the children's schools to train the families on how to use their home learning centers. The FLW program is a unique event where 120+ parents and their 6th grade children receive a computer, gain instruction from a Family Trainer, then pack up and take it home! The training is taught in a bilingual fashion with a CFY Family Trainer presenting the materials in English while a school staff member interprets into Mandarin.
We need your help!
The FLW implementation team at John J. Pershing Middle School in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, is looking for volunteers to help out with the program. John J. Pershing Middle School is a large middle school with around 400 sixth graders, about 2/3 of which are Mandarin-speaking students. Therefore, it has a very specific volunteer need because of its large Mandarin-speaking student population. It is incredibly important for the team to find Mandarin-speaking volunteers so that they can fully serve Mandarin-speaking families in a way that is effective and meaningful for them.
As a Saturday volunteer, you will work directly with students and families on the day of the FLW and focus on helping by: exploring educational games together, guiding the child and parent during the lesson, and most importantly, ensuring they have a positive, memorable experience. Your help is particularly important as you will play a critical role in helping our families understand the materials.

Date(s): November 20th, December 4th, and December 18th (You do not have to commit to all three dates unless you would like to)
