ASCEND ANNOUNCES 2010 DIVERSITY CAREER EXPO AND APPRECIATION GALA,
leadership organization aims to reenergize careers for
college grads and seasoned professionals
The Seattle Chapter of Ascend, a Pan-Asian professional leadership organization, will host the Diversity Career Expo and Appreciation Gala on September 2, 2010. Both events will be held in downtown Bellevue, WA at the Westin Hotel.
Over 20 diversity employers are expected to exhibit and be hiring for positions ranging from entry to managerial. After the Expo, Ascend will host an appreciation dinner gala in honor of their membership and business leaders within the community. Both events are designed to be ideal opportunities to mingle and network with professionals from across Western Washington.
"The Expo is an excellent opportunity to meet employers who realize the importance in a multicultural workplace,” explains Alice Matsuoka, current Seattle Chapter President. "There’s value in diversity, and we’re hoping to illustrate this to the Washington community.”
Matsuoka, along with a handful of others that were working for major international corporations, decided to initiate the Ascend Seattle Chapter in 2009, starting with 41 members. Within a year they have tripled their membership.

Entrance to the Career Expo is FREE. No registration is required to attend. Vendors will include leaders and working professionals from corporate, small business, non-profit, academic, and governmental professional backgrounds.

Glennon J. Cook, Director of Global Staffing for The Boeing Company
Glenn Cook is the director of Global Staffing for The Boeing Company. Global Staffing is part of the Shared Services business unit that provides common, cost-effective and innovative services to all Boeing business units. In this capacity, he is responsible for providing staffing solutions to meet Boeing’s technical and business workforce needs across the enterprise including international. Cook was named to this position in April 2010.
Cook chairs the Staffing Sub-Council for the Boeing People Process Council, the companywide body responsible for supporting Boeing as a global enterprise and fundamentally helping the company’s business units improve performance. He also serves as a member of Shared Services Group’s Employee and Staffing Services leadership team and the University Relations Process Council.
Cook’s Global Staffing team of approximately 200 people is responsible for implementing and operating an efficient staffing process across Boeing. This includes all internal and external hiring -- including college, diversity, professional and intern recruiting and associated recruitment advertising. His team manages all new-employee orientations and maintains company employment policies and related technology systems. This latter area includes applicant tracking and all pre-employment processing, which consists of background screening, drug testing, citizenship verification, and state and federal compliance documentation. In the aggregate, Global Staffing serves as the gateway for Boeing to attract, recruit, and engage intellectual capital critical to its future success.
In 1986, Cook joined The Boeing Company as a payroll accountant for the heritage McDonnell Douglas Company. He has been instrumental in developing common systems for human resource and payroll data at Boeing, starting with his work on Boeing- McDonnell Douglas merger transition teams in 1997. He was the finance leader for the Payroll and Timekeeping organization and managed the company transition to TotalAccess, Boeing employees’ online portal for human resource services. In 2005, Cook was named the director of operations for Enterprise Services in SSG and his role expanded over time to include responsible for strategy and operations across Enterprise Services, including all human resource records, the Boeing Rewards program and TotalAccess,.
Cook has worked to implement Lean + practices at Boeing and has led the development of common, companywide systems that provide fast and easy access to critical human resource data to employees and decision makers. He completed his undergraduate education in 1985 at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, with a degree in finance, and holds a systems development certificate from Washington University in St. Louis. Outside of work, Cook enjoys soccer, fly fishing and golfing.
Cook, his wife and two children reside in the Puget Sound region of Washington state.
Ben Huh, CEO and Founder of Cheezburger Network
Ben Huh is the CEO and founder of Cheezburger Network. He's a former journalist turned dot com entrepreneur who has a knack for nailing the zeitgeist and has been credited with bringing Internet memes to the mainstream and popularizing Internet culture. The success of Cheezburger Network is attributed to Ben’s knowledge of memes, viral content, and crowd sourcing. Ben graduated with a BSJ from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
